GOALS

Motto : Caring and Sharing - Having Fun

- provide a strong communication network for social interaction

- provide interesting and challenging programs for intellectual stimulation, information about issues of particular interest and opportunities for cultural enrichment

- support for colleagues especially in times of illness, loneliness, stress and sorrow

- provide a unique form of hospital and home care insurance exclusively for members and their spouses

- formulate a plan to increase membership

- ensure that R.W.T.O. is a financially well-managed organization both provincially and locally

HISTORY OF R.W.T.O.

During the late 40’s and early 50’s, small groups of retired women teachers in various parts of Ontario were meeting for fun and fellowship. A Toronto group known as The Rendezvous Club organized the inaugural meeting to form a provincial organization which became the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers (OASWT).” ( 1999 Handbook third revision)

1956
- 12 Ontario centres were represented at the meeting

- annual membership fees ranged from $ .25 to $1.00 for pensions

from $600 to slightly more than $1,000.

1958
- first constitution was drafted

1963
- Unique Health Insurance Plan introduced

1966
- Superannuated Teachers of Ontario formed (men and women)

1966
-OASWT granted $100,000 to assist retired women teachers whose

pensions were less than $900 per year. Distributed to 481 teachers

in that year

1971
-4,444 members and 51 branches...15 areas and Area Directors

appointed

- Provincial Office Established in Peterborough

1976
- 20th Anniversary of OASWT

1980
- first official OASWT handbook

1981
- Silver Jubilee Celebrated

1985
- Provincial Honorary Life Memberships established

1986
- each branch received $30 gift to celebrate 30th Anniversary

1990
- branch refund established

1991
- second edition of the Handbook was published.

1992
- an increase in voting representation of the larger branches was

approved

1995
- Johanna Vanderpol appointed as Executive Secretary-Treasurer

1996
- Constitution/Handbook Revision Committee formed

1999
- major revisions to Constitution approved and incorporated in a

new Handbook; name changed to Retired Women Teachers of Ontario.
